A Seat at the Table
Denise is one Congolese ‘teen mom’ who ‘girls like us’ funded to grant her the needed training to become an esthetician. Her one white plastic chair is her ‘business location’.
She sets her chair out on a daily basis on a crowded street, placing it in front of a store that sells hair products.
Women walk by and sit on her plastic chair to get their hair done. (Braids, extensions, etc.) Denise makes enough money to provide:
- food for her little ones
- uniforms for their schooling
- for a place to call ‘home’
Denise has successfully established ‘a seat at the table’ in her Congolese culture. This would have never happened without the help of ‘girls like us’.
